Tommy Hunt

We’ve not had a bona fide soul legend on the Chinwag settee so we were equally delighted and astonished to sit with Tommy Hunt for a chat about life and whatever else comes up.

But where to start and describe Tommy’s incredible story? Born in 1932 in Pittsburgh, Tommy was a member of doo-wop stars The Flamingos scoring a massive hit in 1959 with ‘I Only Have Eyes for You’. He made the first recording of Bacharach and David’s ‘I just don’t know what to do with myself’ (later immortalised by Dusty Springfield), was a regular at The Apollo Theatre in Harlem and Wigan Casino, a legend on the Northern Soul circuit, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, toured with Elvis and marched with Martin Luther King jr at Selma!

Tommy completely blew our minds with his stories, insights but most profoundly with his grace, joy and humanity.
